    Default Runaway 2 and DDraw

    Hello,
Using Linux, I tried the demo version under wine. It fails with an error, but I managed, with a quite ugly hack, to get it working.
But after some discussions with wine developpers, it seems Runaway 2 won't work on VMWare, Qemu, Wine ( unmodified ), some video cards, and probably Windows Vista !
Why ? Because you use a strange pixelformat ( 5 red bits, 6 bits of nothing, 5 green bits ).
Can you fix it, with, for instance, R5G6B5 ? If not, some explanations ?

    Thanks

PS : I also want to play the full game under wine, but the copy-controll system may don't work

I'm afraid to say that I'm not familiar with Linux and Wine so I can't help you on this matter. However, Runaway 2 will work on Windows Vista. I'll pass your information about Linux and Wine to the technical people here.

In fact, Runaway 2 isn't compatible with DirectX, but many video cards can handle "custom" pixelformats. But some ( SiS cards, for instance ? ) can't. Emulator's video cards can't handle them too... So, non-windows users, and some windows users can't play runaway 2.

Well, I have to say that Runaway 2 is compatible with DirectX. In fact, it needs DirectX to work properly.

I mean... It don't respect DirectX specifications about Pixelformats...

That's too way beyond my understanding, sorry, I'm not a tech guy. However, I'll keep staying that is DirectX compatible; if not, it would not work properly.

It don't work properly with only the software part of DirectX. Anyway, many video cards can handle it.
Please check if it's related to SiS onboard cards issue.

Thib, all I can say is that those SIS cards ring a bell and I'm sure the people is working on something regarding that issue. However, don't ask me for details as I don't have them.

I'm currently writing a fonction to convert pixelformats to others, in Wine. So, Wine will soon handle your strange pixelformat.

But I think you're wrong with this pixelformat : You should use only "standard" pixelformats, because DirectX don't handle "custom" ones, but many video card's driver can. I think it is highly related to the SiS issue.

PS : And about the copy-controll protection ? A way to play under linux ?

    Hello,

I'm just wondering when RunAway will be "Vista Ready"? I'm currently running Vista RC2 (I'm waiting the RTM Version) but RunAway2 doesn't want to work :/ (Unable to initialize DirectX) and I know someone with almost the same problem (but with vista RTM)...

I copy/paste some info from dxdiag if they can help to find a solution ...

I guess it's because of the invalid pixelformat... If only a programmer for PENDULO would read this topic...
